Row erupts over naked calendar

A nudity row has broken out after men in Ampthill stripped off in the Market Square to pose for a charity calendar’s cover shoot.

Last week the T&C reported that the Ampthill Calendar Boys charity calendar would be hitting the shelves this week, along with a picture of the cover, which was taken outside the premises that is set to open as a lapdancing club.

But this week a row has broken out on online forum AroundAmpthill, with some users saying that the location for the cover shot was a “poor error in judgement”.

User ‘Money Man’ said: “Is it just me or did the photo of the men holding their crown jewels outside the proposed club in yesterday’s T&C undo all the good work of the protest?

“I know it’s for charity but wrong time, wrong place.”

‘Scrabbler’ added: “300/400 met on the Market Square to protest against a lapdancing club, and then 12 men parade nude in the same place (I know it’s for charity), but this does smack of double standards.”

In a comment that has now been removed, user ‘Carolyn’ added that the men who posed in the calendar are probably “not bothered” about the club.

But organiser of the calendar Chris Hayes, aka ‘Seahaze’, hit back saying: “How dare you suggest that just because these guys have given up their time to be in a charity calendar that they are in the ‘wants’ or ‘not bothered’ category.

“By the way we raised £1.700 today in two hours for Everyman a great cause researching testicular and prostate cancer. That’ll be two hours that you and Scrabbler “probably” spent on here being negative.”

Mr Hayes told the T&C: “I am quite angry about what’s been said. In one breath they are saying they know it’s for charity and then ‘but’.

“They are saying everyone involved in the calendar is not bothered about the club, which is completely not true. I can name 40 people involved who went to the protest.

“I think what’s quite important to say is what we should not be doing is giving in to Shayler, why should we let him affect what we are doing? I think Ampthill is completely the wrong place to have a lapdancing club, but I also think that if it opens it won’t change our lives that much.”

The calendar has already raised over £2,500 for Everyman.
