Madchester rock gods Happy Mondays will headline AmpRocks 2014, it has been confirmed.
Shaun Ryder, Bez, Rowetta and co will take to the stage at Ampthill Park on Friday, July 4 – kick-starting the three-day Ampthill Festival. Their support act will be announced in due course.
News of the Manchester band – synonymous with the city’s iconic alternative dance/indie scene of the late 80s and early 90s – coming to Mid Beds demonstrates the incredible rise of AmpRocks, whose headline sponsor this year is Bedford-based brewery Charles Wells.
The Lightning Seeds, The Feeling, The Hoosiers and Toploader have all played AmpRocks in recent years.
Announcing the news, lead singer and songwriter Shaun Ryder said: “We can’t wait. Every year crowds at AmpRocks have got bigger and bigger, as have the headliners. We promise the biggest and best AmpRocks yet – so see you there!”
The Mondays enjoyed a string of hits including the anthemic Step On, Loose Fit and Kinky Afro and back in 1990 Paul McCartney even compared them to the Beatles!
Organisers are confident last year’s record crowd of 3,300 will be broken.
Ian Scarr, chairman of AmpRocks, said: “To say we are delighted to secure the Mondays is a massive understatement.
“These guys were at the forefront of one of the biggest and most influential musical scenes ever.
“They have a ton of hits and are a brilliant live band so we expect tickets to sell very fast when we release them shortly.
“To be honest, we’re still pinching ourselves that Shaun Ryder and Bez are coming to Ampthill!”
Tickets go on sale early next week both online and in selected shops in Ampthill.
