REVIEW: Cherry Lee Mewis, Ent Shed, Bedford, Friday, October 9.
By Hayley O'Keeffe
Cherry Lee Mewis is a dark horse, and as she takes to the stage at her album launch, the backing band kicks in and the crowd start to clap, the girl sitting so nicely in the audience prior has all but transformed.
Cherry is wild and has the voice and style to back it up, forget Amy Winehouse or Duffy or any of those other female singers who've had it and become bored.
Cherry wants it so bad and if there is a god in heaven he'll make sure she gets her chance.
Southbound Train, Cherry's new album, is a bluesy mix of self written songs and covers which seem to blend effortlessly together the record seems to culminate in a riotous title track which definatly got my foot a tapping.
In the tiny Ent Shed it seems farcical that audience participation would be an option, but tonight anything goes and Cherry has the whole crowd singing along.
Sometimes it is patently obvious when a band is performing a self-penned ditty or cover but I'd be hard pressed to differentiate a hit from a Cherry tune tonight.
So next year, when Cherry Lee Mewis storms the charts with a fantastic catchy bluesy number, say you read about it here first.
