BBC Three Counties' Stephen Rhodes explains shock decision
BBC Three Counties Radio presenter Stephen Rhodes has announced he is to run as an independent candidate for the Luton South seat at the general election.
Stephen, 59, quit his job presenting the station's weekday morning show today, as his political ambitions mean he can no longer work for the corporation.
He said he was fed up with "the way people have been playing around with Luton South for years", and said the seat deserved someone who was not concerned with being loyal to a political party.
He said: "I want Luton to become a place I can love, and then I'll move here from Dunstable.
"It's been nagging me for a long time and now I've decided to get off the fence."
The presenter, who has worked for Three Counties for 15 years, said he wanted to find more things for young people to do in Luton South.
He also wants to find out why people are against the Bushwood Green scheme for 5,500 houses to the west of Luton, and said he would back the scheme "100 per cent" if he came to the conclusion that it would be a good thing for Luton.
His campaign manager is Luton businessman Lee Allen, who has been campaigning for several months for the Bushwood Green development to go ahead.
