Gareth Kingston, from Flitwick, scooped the daytime TV quiz show title on Tuesday’s grand final, bagging £40,000 in the process.

He narrowly beat two other contestants by just one correct answer.

He said: “It was incredible. I was gobsmacked - I still am.”

Gareth has had seven months to get used to his champion status as the final was filmed last October.

He said: “I did tell a couple of people, such as my mum. We watched it on Tuesday together with my brother, who I hadn’t told. He was amazed.”

Gareth is no stranger to quizzing having reached the semi-finals of Mastermind three times.

A regular on the Bedford pub quiz scene, he is also auditioning for Make Me An Egghead, in the hope to join the house team. He said: “It would be living the dream if I got on the show.”

In the meantime, he hopes to travel to Las Vegas to compete in the USA Trivia Championships in August
