Quieter evenings for St Cuthberts?

AN ACOUSTIC barrier which would protect residents against noise from their local pub could be approved by council chiefs.
Bedford Borough Council’s planning committee will discuss the application, by bosses at The Ship in St Cuthberts Street, to erect an acoustic barrier around the pub’s garden.
In the past The Ship has been the subject of complaints from residents about noise from the garden. The barrier application is a response to those concerns.
But one neighbour claimed, in a letter to the committee, that the barrier would only screen noise to the north and east of the patio, and that their property would still be affected.
Concerns were also raised about the increase in numbers of car parking spaces at the pub.
In a report to councillors planning officers have recommended the application in its current form for refusal.
It says that the appearance, size and design of the structure would be detrimental to appearance and setting of the listed building and would fail to preserve or enhance the character of the Grade Two listed building and appearance of the conservation area.
The final decision on whether to grant the application lies with the planning committee at their meeting on Monday, July 23.
