Public praise for saving £2.6million
WASTE representing more than £2.6million in landfill tax has been diverted from landfill thanks to residents’ “magnificent” recycling record, says Central Beds Council
Latest figures from the council show householders in Central Bedfordshire recycled 51.6 per cent of their waste in 2010/11 – placing it seventh out of all unitary councils across the country.
In addition, residents produced 50kg less residual waste per person than the UK average.
If this waste had been disposed of in residents’ black bins and consequently sent to landfill,it would have cost the council £2.6million in landfill tax.
Councillor Budge Wells, deputy member for sustainable communities services at Central Beds, said: “Recycling is not only good for our environment it’s good for council taxpayers’ pockets too. The landfill tax is going up next year to £64 per tonne so it’s important we recycle more to help keep council tax down for residents in these tough times.”
