There was a new barman for the evening at The Fox & Hounds in Riseley as Peter Wells, Managing Director at Charles Wells Pub Company took to the pumps to work a shift at the pub in aid of charity.

Tony and Diane Goodman, licensees at the Fox & Hounds which is famed for its steak theatre experience, bid £600 at a charity event to secure Peter Wells for a shift.

He put himself up for auction to work in one of the 200 Charles Wells pubs across the region to raise money for the pub company’s chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support.

The teams at Charles Wells pubs and in the Bedford head office are certainly no strangers to fundraising for Macmillan, having just handed over a cheque to the charity for over £53,000 - which is more than enough money to fund a Macmillan nurse for an entire year.

They have now committed to doubling the amount raised this year, starting with a series of events as part of the Macmillan May Madness campaign this month.

The Fox & Hounds kicked off the campaign with a big fundraiser on Wednesday, May 7, and Peter Wells arrived for his shift at 6pm to help man the bar.

Also in attendance was the famous Bombardier bus from the Charles Wells brewery and a local Morris Dancing group as well as hundreds of customers who got involved with the fun helping to raise more than £1,000 for the cancer support charity.

Tony said: “We were delighted to have Peter join us for a shift behind the bar to support our big fundraising night for Macmillan Cancer Support. The event was a great success, everyone loved the Morris dancers and we also raised £400 raffling off some of the pub’s old memorabilia. I’d like to thank everyone who came along for their support.”

Peter said: “It was truly a pleasure to work alongside Tony, Diane and the team for the evening while helping raise vital funds for Macmillan. It was fantastic to see such a great turnout for the event which is a real testament to Tony and Diane’s hard work in making the Fox & Hounds a great place for the community to come together.”

Charles Wells’ May Madness campaign continues throughout the month with pubs across Bedfordshire running fundraising events.

The brewery will also be donating 10p for every pint of Eagle beer sold at pubs across the county between May 19 and 26. Find out more and keep up-to-date on events coming up near you on the website at: www.charleswells.co.uk or by following the Facebook page www.facebook.com/charleswellsltd
