The sport of Canicross came to Bedford as dogs of all shapes and sizes descended on Box End Watersports Park to pull their handlers around on foot, bike - and even scooter!
The off-road course around the lakes was a mixture of long flat straights, sharp climbs and descents with strong headwinds testing all on the homeward leg.
First off were the Bikejor and Scooterjor competitors – most with a single dog pulling, some braving two dogs.
Each team set off at one minute intervals to follow the 5k trail.
First past the post was Claire Spencer with Jack from NATB Dog Sports in 13:35 followed closely by Alan Sherwin and Tickle in 13:43.
First on the Scooter was Michael Stone and Monty in 18:37.
An hour’s rest and it was time for the Canicross – this is running with one or two dogs attached and some went up to 10k this time.
Again it was individual starts but only 20 seconds apart so much overtaking was involved – a tricky manoeuvre on a single track…
The winner of the 5k was Tim Ellis with Kenya and Ozzy in a time of 18:10. Second was Elaine with Gavin in 18:21.
The 10k was won by Ian Richardson with Tyler in 48:31.
Canicross is a sport open to all with dogs over 1 year old and is growing rapidly.
Organisers were pleased to see many first-timers taking part on Saturday - electing to go with collar and lead rather than buy the full harness used by more experienced handlers. All crossed the line with smiles – even some of the dogs!
If you and your dog like running then give it a go at the next one coming soon at Box End.
