Policing the playground- How does your child’s school fare?

SEXUAL assault, burglary and cannabis possession are just a few of the reasons that the police have been called into schools across Bedford Borough in just over two years.

From September 1, 2009 to August 31, 2010, 158 incidents of crime in schools were reported to the police, including five cases of cannabis possession, three sexual offences and 31 cases of criminal damage.

And in the past six months there have already been 83 reports of crime, including two sexual offences, nine assaults, 11 cases of criminal damage and nine burglaries.

A spokesperson for Bedford Borough Council claimed this week that work is being done to combat crimes in schools, both those committed by members of the public and those that happen internally.

She said: “It is unacceptable that any criminal offence should take place on school grounds, or should be targeted at our schools.

“We work with partner agencies to try and ensure that local schools offer the safest environment possible.

“It is the responsibility of individual schools to carry out procedures although the council provides clear guidance on dealing with critical incidents in schools.

“If such events arise, schools are advised to follow that guidance and any advice or instructions provided by the police.”

And Bedfordshire Police also claimed that work was being done with students to help counteract anti-social behaviour.

A spokesperson said: “Police schools liaison officers offer a visible presence and work closely with schools and pupils.

“The officer works with pupils to ensure they know how to report things and how to seek information on a range of topics from anti-social behaviour, drugs, alcohol, knife crime, internet safety, cyber bullying and domestic abuse.

“If a crime is reported at the school, the officer will carry out a local investigation if required.

“Acts of criminal damage, burglary and theft within schools are not always committed by pupils at the school.

“These crimes often happen out of school hours and schools are often victims of crime.

“ I  would urge residents who live close to a school to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police.

“The information provided under the Freedom of Information Act does not differentiate between a crime being reported or committed by a pupil or member of the public.”
