A woman was pushed over and punched in the face as a man stole her handbag on Friday evening (August 24).

The incident took place at around 10pm at Ashburnham Road, Bedford, after the 44-year-old woman had left work at Bedford Hospital and called at the Corals bookmakers on Midland Road on her way home.

She then headed towards the railway station and was walking along Ashburnham Road, on the station side.

She was pushed over by a skinny white man, aged about 25, who was 5ft, 10ins tall, with short cropped hair and wearing a long sleeved light blue top.

He then tried to snatch her bag but as she hung on to it, he punched her twice and was eventually able to grab the bag and ran off towards Ashburnham Court.

The woman had cuts on her hands, knees and mouth as a result of the incident.

The brown leather handbag contained £490 in cash, along with various documents and a green make-up bag.

Detective Constable Surinder Ram, based at Greyfrars CID, is investigating the case and would like to hear from anyone who saw any part of this incident or can help with information.

Det Con Ram can be contacted direct on 01234 275357 or text direct to the police control room on 07786 200011.
