Police hunt bungling crooks

Failed bid to rob building society

Two bungling crooks are being hunted by police after a failed attempt to rob a Dunstable town centre building society.

The not-so-dynamic duo tried to smash their way into the Nationwide branch in High Street North, on the evening of Tuesday, March 9.

But the plan to rob security guards as they entered the building went horribly wrong and the would-be thieves decided to give it up as a bad job and fled empty-handed.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses and information following the attempted robbery, which happened at about 8.20pm.

As the security guards entered the building society, the raiders appeared at the door.

But the door security mechanism had locked, leaving the men unable to get in.

One of them repeatedly kicked the door until the glass shattered, but they eventually realised they would be unable to enter the building.

They ran off towards The Quadrant shopping centre.

Both men were black, in their early 20s, slim and about 6ft tall.

One had a grey scarf covering his face and wore a dark hooded top, baggy jeans and trainers.

The second, who wore dark clothing with a pointed hood, was slightly shorter.

Det Con Gill Cowley would like to trace a woman who was close by and went to speak to the security guards after the drama.

The detective said: "We are keen to speak to anyone who saw the offenders – motorists or pedestrians in the shopping area or town centre.

"The offenders may have had a car parked in the town. I would urge anyone with any information to contact us in complete confidence."
