Plea for action over busy road

Neighbours want speed cameras to be installed

An urgent call for action over a 'danger road' has been made by neighbours in Houghton Regis, after a two-car crash caused a gas leak drama.

The accident in Bedford Road led to one vehicle colliding with a cottage and damaging a gas main.

A gas cloud formed and 20 homes had to be evacuated while the emergency services dealt with the situation.

Luckily, there were no reports of injuries.

But the crash has prompted neighbours to renew their call for more road safety measures.

Lynne Thomas lives in the cottage damaged in the accident last week.

The house was left with scrapes and gouges across the front wall.

She said that accidents regularly happen in that area.

This week, she called for new safety measures, such as permanent speed cameras.

Lynne, who was not referring to the circumstances of the latest crash, said drivers often ignore the speed limit there.

The Bedford Road speed limit is 30mph close to the town centre, but jumps to 40mph further along the road.

She explained: "I would like permanent speed cameras here. I think that would be the answer."

Councillor David McVicar, of Central Beds Council, said that for permanent speed cameras to be considered for a road, a number of speed-related fatalities or serious injury accidents would have to have occurred there over the past three years.

He said the accident record showed a number of incidents 'between the High Street and Bidwell Farm', mainly in the 40mph speed limit area.

Mr McVicar said: "As none of the accidents show speeding as the direct cause, the introduction of a speed camera is not deemed to be appropriate at this location."

Resurfacing work had been carried out in March and road markings were redesigned as part of a safety scheme.
