Play safe in Beds
No Caption ABCDE
NHS Bedfordshire is reminding young people this Valentine’s day to ‘play safe’ and to sign up to its condom distribution scheme – the C-Card.
The message comes as it launches an advertising campaign to promote how young people can use the scheme to access free condoms and information on local sexual health services.
The C-Card is a plastic key fob which people under 25 years old can use to access free condoms at any of the 70 approved sites across Bedfordshire, making it easier than ever to access contraception.
Since launching the scheme in August 2011, nearly 800 young people have registered for a C-Card and more than 8,000 condoms have been given out.
Sue Burridge, public health coordinator at NHS Bedfordshire, said: “Evidence suggests that access to contraception and sexual health services has a significant impact on reducing unintended pregnancy rates in teenagers and also protects young people from contracting and passing on a sexually transmitted infection (STI).
“There are now around 70 sites where young people, once registered, can access free condoms, including sexual health clinics, the University and colleges, selected GP practices, Children’s Centres, hostels and various youth settings, such as TACTIC.”
