Pensioner attacked in robbery

Detectives in Bedford are appealing for witnesses after a pensioner was attacked by two men who attempted to rob him as he walked along a Bedford street last night (January 9).

The incident happened at around 8.15pm as the 69 year old victim was walking along Castle Road close to the large roundabout near Rothsay Road.

The two offenders approached the victim from behind, pushed him to the floor and then one of the attackers straddled the man before demanding his wallet.

When the pensioner refused, he was punched to the face and left with a large gash just above his eye. The two offenders then fled empty handed towards Goldington Road.

The victim was taken to Bedford Hospital for treatment to the cut on his eye.

Detective Constable Luke Moore, who is investigating the incident, is keen to hear from anyone who was in Castle Road, Rothsay Road or Goldington Road at the time of the attempted robbery and may have seen the offenders.

DC Moore said: “This was an abhorrent attack on an elderly man by a pair of cowards.

“I would urge anyone who was in the area and may have seen the assault taking place, to get in contact as quickly as possible so we can locate these offenders as quickly as possible.”

The offender who assaulted the victim is described as being a white male, in his mid 20s, of skinny build with a northern accent and wearing a green jacket with blue jeans.

There is no description of the second offender.
