Bedfordshire’s Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner has unexpectedly resigned from the post.

Tafheen Sharif , who stood down last Friday, said she would comment on her reasons “when the time comes”.

She said: “I am honoured to have served the people of Bedfordshire, to make a valuable contribution and difference to the community.

“I wish the PCC and the team all the best for the future.”

PCC Olly Martins said he accepted her resignation “with regret”.

He added: “The Police and Crime Panel has been advised and it would be inappropriate to comment further.”

Ms Sharif, 31, was appointed to the four-day-a-week role, which earns £36,000, in November 2011.
