A policeman saved a man’s life by diving into the River Great Ouse in the early hours of Sunday morning.

PC Thomas Dobinson was on patrol at 2.20am when his unit received a call alerting them to a concern for safety for a man stood on Town Bridge.

When officers arrived at the scene they tried to speak to the 24-year-old man, only for him to leap into the river close to The Embankment.

PC Dobinson immediately entered the water after the man and was able to pull him safely to the surface. He then handed him over to paramedics who took the man to hospital.

Colleagues pulled PC Dobinson out of the river and ensured that he did not suffer any ill-effects from being in the water.

PC Dobinson said: “Being a police officer means that you often have to deal with all manner of incidents and a lot of the time you react on instinct and adrenaline. As soon as I saw the young man leap into the river, I knew that I had to do something, and in this case it was jump in after him.

“It’s fair to say that being in the River Ouse in the early hours of a Sunday morning wasn’t my idea of fun, but being a police officer means that you have a duty to preserve life.

“You don’t think about what you have done until afterwards, but I’m just thankful that the young man was not injured and he is now getting the treatment that he needs.”

Inspector Gavin Hughes-Rowland of Bedfordshire Police said: “The selfless bravery of PC Dobinson combined with his calm actions helped to prevent what could easily have turned out to be a tragedy. I am immensely proud of his efforts in rescuing this young man.”
