A loyal clientele, and community spirit are what landlord Paul Shilladay cites as the secret to the success of The Bear in Bedford High Street.

And Paul should know, he will celebrate running the alternative pub for 27 years on Saturday with a party for regulars, an event which could mark him becoming Bedford’s longest serving landlord.

He said: “The industry has changed a whole lot over 27 years and at times it has been tough, especially being on the High Street.

“Because it is cheap to drink at home people buy into the atmosphere when they go into a pub for a drink, that’s even more important now.

“I think every town used to have an independent pub and that’s what we are. This is a place where people can hear different music and people who feel a little bit different feel at home here.

“We’ve had two reunions since we’ve been here.

“I’ve not been to another pub that’s had a reunion for old regulars and since 1985 there’s been an awful lot of regulars. A lot of people spend their growing up years in this pub.”

Paul will celebrate in style with a special party at the pub on Sunday for regulars and friends.

The Bear will open it’s doors at 3pm on the day.
