It has been three decades since a full scale, open air production of the Passion Play has been performed on the streets and on Saturday, March 26 the town will be filled with colour for the traditional event.

The play will start at 10.30am in Church Square and proceed through the town centre to finish in the Castle Quarter at around 12.30pm.

With the support of the Passion Play Trust and in association with Hope in Bedfordshire, ministers from various churches in Bedford have been working with local theatre company, No Loss Productions, to bring the play back to Bedford this Easter.

Director Cally Lawrence said: “This live theatre performance recreates The Passion Play or Easter pageant. A new script has been written which will retell the story of Jesus’ trials, crucifixion and resurrection in a fresh and direct way. The play will have a large cast both in acting roles as well as behind the scenes, making it a huge undertaking for the organisers.

“This is unlike any other project I have worked on in my 20 years in theatre. I am so excited to be working with such a wide range of people in my home town. I think the event is going to be very special because it is driven by the Bedford community and what they bring to the work.

“The play itself will work its way through the modern streets of Bedford and, in so doing, will bring the story of Jesus to life in the 21st century.”
