Parking fears over court merger plan

Fears have been expressed that there is not enough parking provision in Ampthill after it was revealed that coroner’s courts in Bedfordshire will move to the town.

Central Bedfordshire
Council have revealed plans to merge
Bedford Coroner’s Court with Luton at a central office, based at the The Court House in Woburn Street.

But the announcement has been met with some opposition with
residents in the town saying the move will just make parking worse.

On the online forum Around
Ampthill, user Scrabbler said: “I
wonder if anyone has thought about
the parking situation?

“Especially if the Court House is going to cater for offices as well as the coroner’s court. When will Central Bedfordshire wake up to the parking problems here in Ampthill?”

A coroner’s court holds inquest hearings that investigate the circumstance surrounding someone’s death.

Councillor Maurice Jones, executive member for resources at Central Beds, said: “We are proposing to rationalise and improve accommodation arrangements for the coroner’s court and offices in Bedfordshire.

“When the leases for the current premises in Luton and Bedford come to an end in November 2012 and
September 2013 respectively we will not be renewing these.

“The Ampthill court house is
currently being refurbished and will become home to the whole of the
coroner’s service. We will be looking at options for car parking provision as part of this move.”
