Miracle escape after car and lorry collide

A man and a woman walked away unhurt after the car they were driving ended up underneath a lorry following a collision on the A1.

Their black Volkswagen Golf collided with the lorry on the A1 between Sandy and Biggleswade at 9.30pm on Sunday.

Ambulance crews from Biggleswade, Kempston and Letchworth attended after the collision on the northbound carriageway.

The lorry driver was also uninjured.

East of England Ambulance Service spokesman Gary Sanderson said: "We believe the lorry collided with a car on the northbound carriageway, which then dragged it over to the southbound carriageway.

"The car ended up underneath the rear of the lorry.

"Fortunately the car and the lorry didn't hit anything travelling on the opposite carriageway and amazingly both of the occupants of the car were uninjured.

"Paramedics couldn't believe the rear wheels of the lorry were on top of the bonnet of the car."

Mr Sanderson said the pair were fortunate to have walked away unharmed.

He added: "The man and the woman were very lucky indeed to have escaped."

A Bedfordshire Police spokesman confirmed that around 400 yards of the central reservation crash barrier had been damaged in the accident, and that both carriageways were closed until 5am on Monday morning.
