A man has pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of alcohol.
Donatas Mikalauskas admitted the offence at Bedford Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday. The 36-year-old was stopped by police for an unrelated query while he was driving his silver Mercedes along Aldburgh Close, in Bedford.
A test revealed that he had 83 milligrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The legal limit is 80.
The lorry driver, who lives in Aldburgh Close, had been drinking alcohol at his brother-in-law’s birthday celebrations the previous evening.
The defence said that he had done the sensible thing and stayed over the night before but he did not realise he was still over the limit the following day.
Mikalauskas was disqualified from driving for 12 months, to be reduced to nine months if he completes a course, and fined £470. He must also pay £85 costs and a £47 victim surcharge.
