Olympic rower Tim Foster will be taking to the water at Bedford Rowing Lake for the first time this weekend - at a special open day about the planned leisure complex.
Plans for Bedford Rowing Lake includes a university campus, an array of sporting facilities, a retirement village, and it will provide an opportunity for professional athletes to train. It is hoped that the first half will be open within five years.
The Bedford Rowing Lake Community Interest Company is holding an open day from 10am on Saturday to update people on its ambitious plan to create the lake and surrounding area. It will be at the lake’s midway point at Willington Road, just off the A603.
And Mayor of Bedford Dave Hodgson will host a turf cutting ceremony, which will be attended by Olympic rowing champion Tim Foster at Willington Road, off the A603.
Pete Mulkerrins, a director at the company, said: “This has been going on for 15 years now, so we’re really happy to get to this stage it’s a real milestone for us, I think it will be a real asset for Bedford”
The lake will be the centrepiece of three-and-a-half square miles of the Bedford River Valley Park, which will stretch from Willington to Priory Country Park.
