A mum from Kempston is taking on a half marathon to help ex-service members who have impaired vision.

Nurse Angela Barrington is running the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon in London on October 12 in aid of Blind Veterans UK, after learning about her family’s lifelong support for the charity.

Angela, 30, and a mother of two is taking on the challenge with her husband Craig, 31, a sergeant in the army whose grandmother Dorothy Collins has supported Blind Veterans UK since the Second World War.

Blind Veterans UK, formerly known as St Dunstan’s, was founded in 1915 to help vision-impaired ex-service men and women, and celebrates its centenary next year.

Dorothy, 87, from Dorset has supported the charity since 1943 in memory of her brother who died after his plane was shot down in Nieheim, Germany.

Angela, who works at Milton Keynes Hospital as a paediatric nurse in A&E says: “My family have supported Blind Veterans UK since 1943 so I have a very personal reason for raising money this wonderful charity. As an army wife with a husband recently back from Afghanistan, I feel very strongly about the importance of military charities. And as a nurse, I know first-hand how important and precious sight is.

“My husband’s grandmother Dorothy supported Blind Veterans UK since losing her brother in World War II. She felt strongly that she wanted to support a military charity in memory of her brother and others who gave their lives for their country. This has inspired me and my husband to raise as much money as we can by running the Royal Parks Half Marathon. Our two daughters, Isabella, 6, and Eleana, 3, will be cheering us on, and hopefully we’ll be inspiring the next generation to support this wonderful charity.”

Blind Veterans UK still has a few guaranteed places available for the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon. Visit www.blindveterans.org.uk/royalparks to apply.

Victoria Marshall, events officer, would like to hear from anyone who is still hoping to get a place for the Royal Parks Foundation Half Marathon – or anyone who has a ballot place but hasn’t yet chosen a charity. They offer the team of runners support and assistance.
