New train cops to tackle anti-social behaviour
Officers meet Luton mayor
A new British Transport Police team which will patrol the First Capital Connect line around Luton were unveiled at the town's main train station.
The 11-strong team of officers were unveiled at Luton Station, in Midland Road, by new mayor Councillor Mohammed Riaz. They will cover stations from London Blackfriars up to Bedford, with seven of the team concentrating their efforts on the Luton and Bedford areas.
Insp Damien Walsh, who will oversee the team, said: "These officers will play an important role in reassuring passengers that the railways are a safe way to travel.
"Particularly as far as antisocial behaviour, drugs and offensive weapons are concerned, the message is simple. British Transport Police will not tolerate such activity on the railway and the team will be enforcing that message robustly.
"The team will work closely with First Capital Connect rail staff, local businesses, the local police force and council to ensure that intelligence is shared and that any persistent problems are identified and dealt with swiftly and effectively."
