A MAJOR rail link which is set to bring jobs and investment to Bedford could be in place in just five years time.

On Monday the Department For Transport confirmed it its high level output specification, which plans spending until 2019, that the western section of East West Rail Link, which travels between Bedford and Oxford will go ahead.

The lines will also be electrified meaning that passengers can expect a more reliable and environmentally friendly service.

Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, who has campaigned to secure the project, said: “These announcements are great news for rail users and great news for Bedford Borough’s economy.

“Bedford already benefits from strong transport links, and the projects confirmed through these announcements will only make Bedford Borough an even more attractive location for residents and for investors.”

He added: “We have long campaigned for East West Rail, and the council is a committed member of the East West Rail Consortium, so we are of course delighted that this crucial scheme is to be delivered.

“The fact that it is to be electrified is further good news, making the line even more viable in the longer term and setting out a bright future for a crucial rail link which will open up all sorts of new opportunities for residents and businesses.”

What do you think the East West Rail Link will do for Bedford?
