Pregnant mums will be able to sit more comfortably at Bedford Hospital, thanks to a new delivery of chairs.

Bedford Hospital will receive funding for 16 new recliner chairs for its maternity unit, thanks to a £25million fund set up by the government.

Around 100 hospitals have benefitted from the fund, which is aimed at improving the country’s maternity units.

Naomi Gallagher, Head of Midwifery, said: “We are all delighted with the news that we have received extra funding to purchase new reclining chairs. They will make a real difference in further improving the environment of the unit for our new and expectant parents.

“We used direct feedback from parents using our maternity unit to decide what we would bid for, and reclining chairs were identified as something which they said would be great to have.”

She added: “The recliner chairs can be converted to beds for partners to rest, especially overnight, so that they can remain with their spouse and newborn baby. This will assist in keeping the new family unit together from the outset and will afford the partner the opportunity to participate in their baby’s care and positively contribute to bonding.”

Bedford Hospital applied for money for the chairs last year and were tasked with proving that local mums and dads wanted the changes.

Bids for a share of the cash were judged by a panel that included representatives from the Royal College of Midwives and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
