A new surface car park has been confirmed as part of a £6.2million redevelopment of Bedford Bus Station.

This week Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford confirmed exclusively to the Times & Citizen that the site of the former Gwyn and Patteshull Court flats would become a 130 space car park next year.

Mr Hodgson said: “We’ve worked to put together the funds to deliver real regeneration of the bus station area, and I’m pleased to confirm that new surface car parking will be included as part of the improvements taking place.

“The Riverside North development will bring major benefits with the new cinema and riverside restaurants, but I know people have been concerned by the prospect of losing surface parking.

“So, I’m glad we’re able to include brand new surface parking as part of this project. The bus station has been in need of regeneration for decades, and in spite of the tough economic times we are working to make this vital regeneration happen and improve our town centre for everyone.”

As well as the car park spring 2013 will see Bedford Bus Station get a multi-million pound makeover which is set to include refurbishments to Allhallows multi-storey car park and public toilets.

A new bus station building is also part of the project and design work is already underway.

The new surface car parking facilities will offset the loss of spaces after the Riverside car park is closed to make way for the Riverside North leisure complex.
