Friendships and community relations were boosted in Bedford with the simple act of sharing food.

The Midland Road Residents’ Association organised a street party to mark the annual Big Lunch event, with record numbers of residents taking part.

Association member Shish Miah said nearly all the residents of Battison Street and the surrounding streets attended with everyone bringing home-made treats, while restaurants such as The Bengal Brasserie served up speciality dishes.

He said: “There was entertainment and music adding to the already friendly, neighbourly feel. It was great to see all the residents and visitors come together in such a positive way, just proves what a great community Midland Road has.”

Mr Miah added his thanks to MARA members for putting in the effort to organise the day, and they are now “looking forward to doing it all again next year”.

The national Big Lunch event stems from an idea by Cornwall’s Eden Project. The aim is to get as many people as possible across the whole of the UK to have lunch with their neighbours annually on the first Sunday in June in a simple act of community, friendship and fun.
