Five new mums from Bedford who met through classes for parents are calling on others to join a massive fundraiser for a children’s charity.
The mums, who met at local National Childbirth Trust (NCT) classes are calling on residents to host a Big Packed Lunch to raise vital funds for the NSPCC’s ChildLine Schools Service.
The NSPCC Big Packed Lunch takes place on Wednesday, September 17 but participants can host their event anytime throughout the month. You can invite friends, family or colleagues and get together for a lunchtime to remember.
Hold a theme lunch, or add some competition by taste-testing and scoring everyone’s lunches. Make it as creative and unusual as you like, invite as many people as possible and then donate the money you’d otherwise have spent on shop-bought sandwiches.
Funds raised through the Big Packed Lunch will help fund the NSPCC’s ChildLine Schools Service which is being delivered all over the UK.
It is run by trained volunteers through assemblies and workshops and it teaches 9 – 11 year olds about the different forms of abuse.
It gives them the confidence to talk about abuse, the knowledge to prevent it and the courage to seek help if they ever need it.
The service aims to speak to every primary school child from 2016 and continue visiting each school every two years - reaching 1.7 million children across the UK.
To date the service has carried out four school visits in Bedfordshire and reached almost 600 children.
Emma Talbot, mum to 13-week-old Jude, said: “It was great to be able to support the Big Packed Lunch for the NSPCC.
“We all met through NCT and are all new mums so the NSPCC is a charity close to our heart. “We meet regularly for a picnic or cream teas so it made sense to hold one in aid of the charity. Too many children live in unhappy households and we hope the money we raised will go to support the worthwhile work of the NSPCC’s ChildLine Schools Service.”
The NSPCC has produced a Big Packed Lunch fundraising pack which includes hints and tips for staging an event.
