MP welcomes move to beat metal thefts
alistair burt MP
NEW laws to tackle the rising number of metal thefts have been welcomed by North East Beds MP Alistair Burt.
The Conservative MP has lobbied both this and the previous government on this issue.
The new measures will prohibit the use of cash to pay for scrap metal, and increase the maximum penalties so that dealers who break the law can receive unlimited fines.
Mr Burt said: “I welcome these tough new measures from the government.
“I know many constituents’ lives have been affected by the theft of scrap metal, from churches that have to repair roofs, small businesses affected by the theft of communications equipment, commuters who suffer delays due to damage on railway lines, and rural farmers who have to deal with stolen equipment.
“I regularly meet with constituents from across Bedfordshire and have been aware of these issues for some time.
“Prohibiting cash from an entire sector is a bold move, but it means that all transactions will now leave a trail of identification which can be followed up if suspicions arise.”
