MP for Bedford and Kempston Richard Fuller could have a fight on his hands at the next general election according to a new poll by Lord Ashcroft.
The poll was commissioned by the Conservative peer and is focussed on key battle grounds for the next general election. It found that in Conservative-held areas including Bedford there has been a 7.5 per cent swing to Labour since 2010.
Mr Fuller, who beat former Labour MP Patrick Hall to the seat by 1,353 votes at the last election, claimed this week that there is nothing to worry about yet.
He said: “Trying to deal with 15 years of the last government wrecking the economy and building up massive debts is going to take a lot of time.
“Everyone is going to feel hard done by, but I think people will understand the bigger picture and understand that we have got to stop borrowing from our children and grandchildren.”
But Mike Smithson, who runs the Political Betting website claimed that Richard Fuller may have to work hard to regain his seat, when he stands against Patrick Hall again in two years time.
He said: “It’s a snapshot of where things are at the moment and it looks pretty good for Labour.”
He added: “If this continues then it isn’t looking good. There are two years to go but it must be quite uncomfortable for Richard Fuller.”
