More misery ahead on the railways
12 months of disruption as gigantic engineering project takes shape
Rail travellers from the Luton and Bedfordshire areas will suffer more than a year of disruption on the Thameslink line to Brighton and other South East towns when a gigantic engineering project is carried out in London.
The work is linked to the building of a new station in the Kings Cross/St Pancras area.
Thameslink's cross-London services will be affected by a series of closures to their route starting in September of this year.
The closures are necessary to enable Network Rail to undertake a series of track and signalling improvements, which will pave the way for the construction of a new Thameslink station at St Pancras.
From September 2003 until July 2004 a number of weekend and weekday (night time) closures will occur.
On these occasions, services running from/to Bedford will termi-nate/start at West Hampstead or Kentish Town. Services from/to Brighton and Sutton will termi-nate/start their journeys at Blackfriars Station.
There will be no services stopping at Moorgate, Farringdon, or Kings Cross Thameslink stations.
Once the initial track and signalling work is completed the Thameslink route will be severed in September 2004 for approximately six months. A concrete enclosure will be constructed underground between the existing Kings Cross Thameslink station and St Pancras station.
This enclosure will ultimately house the new Thameslink station to be known as "St Pancras – Midland Road".
During this second phase, Thameslink services from/to Bedford will start/terminate at St. Pancras. Services from/to Brighton and Sutton will start/terminate at Kings Cross Thameslink station.
Closures will start on September 27, this year.
From then until December 2003 there will be the same pattern of closures each week, as follows: -
- Saturdays, after 0200 hrs; Sundays, all day; Mondays, before 0500 hrs and after 2100; Tuesdays, before 0500 and after 2100; Wednesdays, before 0500; Thursdays, normal service; Fridays, normal service.
- From 21.00 hours on Wednesday 24th December 2003 until Wednesday 7th January 2004 the through route will be blocked. During this period services to/from Bedford will start/terminate at Kentish Town. Services to/from Brighton and Sutton will terminate at Blackfriars station.
Details of closures between January and July 2004 will be provided in November 2003.
