Morrisons will open its doors in Ampthill Road on Monday - spelling good news for the local economy.
That’s according to Dave Hodgson, the Mayor of Bedford, who says that the new supermarket will bring a much-needed boost to the town.
He said: “It’s really good news, we’ve got more jobs, more choice and it is another reason to come and shop in Bedford.
“There is also going to be a petrol station and I hope the prices are nice and cheap and competitive.”
He added: “The Ampthill Road site has been derelict for years and even in the middle of the worst recession in years we are still managing to bring some new development to that site.”
The new store has created 65 new jobs with many long term unemployed people being able to get back to work.
The new store’s general manager Ben Daley said: “The layout is fantastic and the open-plan counters mean that everyone can see what goes on behind the scenes with bakers kneading the dough and butchers making sausages.
“That means customers can be confident that a lot of the food they’re buying is made from scratch in the store.
“We’re really pleased that we’ve been able to create so many permanent jobs for people in the town and we hope that the store will draw even more shoppers into Bedford.”
