Transport minister Chris Mole begins construction for hard shoulder scheme

Work on a scheme to allow motorists to use the M1 hard shoulder in Beds during busy periods has been started by transport minister Chris Mole.

The scheme, to be completed in 2013, will see motorists able to travel on a 15-mile stretch, increasing capacity and improving journey times.

Mr Mole witnessed the start of construction between Junction 10 at Luton and Junction 13 at Milton Keynes.

Work to prepare the site began in August, six months earlier than planned, thanks to 16.6 million of government funding.

A contraflow is currently in place between Junctions 10 and 11, with narrow lanes and a 50mph speed limit.

Sections of the hard shoulder on the northbound carriageway between Junctions 12 and 13 are closed, with narrow lanes and a 50mph limit.

A public inquiry on upgrades to junctions 11 and 12 is set to take place later this year.
