Miller museum hosts Battle of Britain Day

Event organised to mark 90th anniversary of the formation of the RAF

To mark the 90th anniversary of the formation of the RAF, the Glenn Miller Museum is hosting a lecture day on the subject of the Battle of Britain.

The battle was a key part of British history, and although it took place nearly 70 years ago it remains a subject that everyone knows a little bit about.

The way the battle has been represented has altered over the years, and on September 20, between 10am and 4pm, these changing

perceptions will be examined in four talks at the Glenn Miller Museum, at Twinwood in Clapham.

For many, their introduction to these events will have been the MGM film of the Battle of Britain, itself now nearly 40 years old.

To open the day, Chris Chandler, a long-time student of aviation history, will describe the actual making of the film, and show some of the slides taken behind the scenes by the film company at the time.

The next speaker is Robert Allen, who will talk on the present day methods of aviation archaeology.

Much has been learned by first-hand wreck recovery of both British and German air forces in recent years, making a valuable addition to the more conventional research of written sources.

There will be time over lunch to view some of the material he has, quite literally, unearthed.

After the buffet lunch, which is included in the ticket price, the museum welcomes distinguished aviation historian Dr Alfred Price to illustrate, in some detail, the events of September 15, 1940, commemorated each year as 'Battle of Britain Day'.

This again will be a slide presentation, and will reference his excellent book on the subject.

Finally, what of the 120 or so surviving members of 'The Few?'

Geoff Simpson, from the Battle of Britain Memorial Trust, will talk about those alive today, what they think of the public view of the battle and their part in it.

He will also explain how 'The Few' view themselves, a unique

opportunity to get an insight from the inside.

The whole day promises to be a fascinating experience, whether or not you have any knowledge of the 1940s RAF.

Tickets cost 15, including tea and coffee breaks, a buffet lunch and access to the restored Glenn Miller Museum, housed in the

Control Tower at the Twinwood Arena and Airfield.
