A TEENAGER has ditched her wheelchair and has been able to start college to achieve her dreams after receiving specialist treatment for ME at a Bedford practice.
Laura Dodge, 19, is now in her second year of a beauty therapy course at Bedford College, but would not have been able to start her studies had it not been for the revolutionary treatment which she started three years ago.
Aged just 13 Laura was diagnosed with ME, a chronic condition which causes the sufferer to present symptoms including extreme tiredness, lethargy, mental confusion, muscle pain and short term memory loss.
The teenager and her mother sought a number of treatments all of which failed to alleviate Laura’s condition which left her confined to a wheelchair at times.
Laura said: “I didn’t do my GCSEs as a result of the condition and my memory is bad from that time because all the days seemed to roll into one.
“My mum and I had tried so many paths to get me better.”
By the time Laura was 16 years old she had all but given up on resuming her studies, but after starting treatment with osteopath Sorrel Pindar at the Bedford Integrative Health Centre, in St Loyes Street her whole life outlook changed.
Sorrel treated Laura using the Perrin Technique, a form of massage which works with the lymphatic system to drain the body of the accumulated toxins which cause problems for sufferers of ME. The technique is then combined with advice on posture, exercise, nutrition and lifestyle to achieve maximum results.
Laura, who now visits the practice around twice or month for ongoing treatment, said: “Now my concentration is better I have less pain and I can move more, especially as Sorrel has also sorted my back alignment out. I don’t use a wheelchair at all now.”
“I’m not sure if I would have been able to go to college, I would definitely have struggled and I don’t really think I would have been able to go at all had I not had the treatment.”
She added: “I am thrilled at the thought of being able to live a healthy normal life. Sorrel has been a great support, not only with teaching me the massage techniques but she has shown me great care and has always had a genuine interest in my health and me.”
Upon diagnosis for ME many patients are told that there is no cure and that all they can hope for is to manage their activity levels.
But by using the Perrin Technique at the Bedford practice, which is only place that offers it in the whole of Bedfordshire, Milton Keynes, Northamptonshire and Lincolnshire, sufferers have seen significant results.
Sorrel Pindar, who trained as a Perrin Technique practitioner in 2007, said: “Doing the treatments is immensely satisfying and it’s very rewarding and amazing to see how people change.
“A lot of people come in, particularly young people who can be very, very depressed and withdrawn. But after the treatments they have a new lease of life.”
