Father's advice after tragic death of son

A father whose son died suddenly and unexpectedly is urging long-term couples to get married if they have not already done so.

Buddy Fox is still coming to terms with the death of his son Robert, who died of a heart attack at the wheel of his car two months ago at the age of 41.

Although Robert had been with his partner Juliet for 23 years, they were never married, and Mr Fox said the financial aftermath of his son's death had proved to be extremely difficult.

Mr Fox, 65, who runs Arlesey Carpets with his son Danny, 35, said: "Robert and Juliet were a happy and committed couple, and were together for a very long time, but because they weren't married and Robert had not written a will it meant that Juliet was entitled to very little when he died.

"By law everything has been passed on to myself and my wife Sally, which has left Juliet in a very difficult position, though of course we are doing everything we can to help and support her."

Mr Fox, who lives in All Saints Way, Sandy, and used to run the carpet business off Arlesey High Street with Robert's help, said a marriage certificate can make the difference between a smooth transition of a deceased partner's property and funds and a legal and logistical nightmare.
