Man swung fists during his hospital treatment
A MAN who suffers from conditions including social phobia clenched his fists at a nurse who was trying to treat him at Bedford Hospital, a court heard on Tuesday.
Ian Whittemore, 45, of Cardington Road, Bedford, pleaded guilty to the offences which took place on December 12 last year.
The court heard how Mr Whittemore, who has recently been diagnosed with Asberger’s syndrome was taken to accident and emergency by ambulance after being found drunk and unconscious.
While he was in the department he was threatening to one of the nurses and raised his clenched fists. Mr Whittemore also swung his fists towards a man who was pushing his wheelchair.
Following his arrest Mr Whittemore admitted to police that he had drunk several pints of beer and had no recollection of the incident.
During the hearing his defence told how Mr Whittemore suffers from a number of mental health problems, and has recently lost his mother who he has lived with his entire life.
A a result of his mother’s death Mr Whittemore can no longer live at his home address and has been rehoused, which has not helped his mental health problems.
The defence stated that he fully accepts that he did raise his fists at the hospital.
Mr Whittemore, who was supported in court by his sister, was given a conditional discharge of 12 months and ordered to pay £85 in costs.
His mental health problems were stated as the reason for the sentence type.
