Man lifts Britain’s Strongest gong

A roofer, who makes all his own weights, has been crowned Britain’s Strongest Man after a gruelling two-day national competition.
Glen Kerr, of Marne Street, Kempston, was victorious in the under 90kg category in the UK Ultimate Strongest Man competition, which was held at Paradise Wildlife Park in Broxbourne, Hertfordshire.
The 37-year-old powered his way to the title, which consisted of nine uniquely named events including the Giant Yoke Run, Fingle’s Finger and the Atlas Stones.
He said: “It was awesome. Training so hard and then achieving something like that, it’s great.”
The former international hammer-thrower and bobsledder went into the competition with high hopes.
He added: “I knew I had a good chance of winning. Over the past few years I’ve made my own equipment to practice with for the events and it’s worked out.”
Glen finished the first day sitting in third position, but put in an incredible performance on the second day admitting: “I was on fire”.
He went into the final event, the Atlas Stones, holding the lead and cruised to victory lifting stones up to 140kg onto a 50 inch platform to take home the title.
Glen said the toughest part of the weekend was the Fingle’s Finger.
He added: “Imagine a telegraph pole. It needs to be lifted end to end, then tipped over and it weighs 250kg.”
The champion is undecided on his future and might defend his crown next year, but is feeling tempted to take up hammer-throwing again.
He said: “I might go back to athletics because I’ve achieved what I wanted to achieve now.”
“I was involved in athletics for 20 years and competed at international standard. With the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in two years I might make a return.”
