A daughter claimed that staff at a rehabilitation failed to tell her just how seriously ill her father was at his inquest this week.

Herbert William Barlow, 91, a former teacher, died on June 30 after suffering an unwitnessed fall at the Archer Unit in Bedford.

At an inquest on Tuesday Mr Barlow’s daughter Susan Ungerprapakorn, told how she saw her father the day before the accident, and he was looking forward to returning to his home where he lived independently.

Mrs Ungerprapakorn said: “The last time I saw him was Sunday, June 26 and I took him out for a couple of hours in the afternoon.

“He was feeling the best he had in a long time.”

She added: “At 9am I received a call saying the had a fall and had a bang on his head and was being taken to A&E for an x-ray.

“I headed to A&E and found that my father was unconscious, I was very shocked to find that my father was in an extremely bad way, my father was a very strong man and a fighter.”

Mr Barlow was being cared for at the Archer Unit following an operation to treat a bowel obstruction. But Mrs Ungerprapakorn claimed that when she was called to be told of her father’s condition the seriousness of the matter was not conveyed.

The inquest also heard from nurse Julie Porter who took questions on treatment that Mr Barlow received on the night. A verdict will be delivered next week so that the coroner can examine documents not available at the inquest.
