Volunteers swelter during garden project

More than 160 Mormon volunteers braved the blistering heat to help with the renovation of the walled garden at Luton Hoo.

Church members created a vegetable garden, planting hundreds of pumpkins, sunflowers and gourds as well as tomato vines.

They then turned their attention to building frameworks for compost heaps, renovating an old orchard and stacking logs to make a bug garden.

Luton mayor Councillor Mohammed Riaz, who made a speech of thanks, was so impressed by all the hard work that he had a go at planting some sunflowers himself.

Walled Garden Project manager Charlotte Philips was equally delighted - she said it would have taken months to achieve what the volunteers had done in a day.
