Social housing provider Aragon Housing Association has teamed up with World Champion and Olympic silver medallist Kriss Akabusi to help young tenants.

Project Mackenzie has been set up by the housing association, former professional athlete Kriss and Construction Gateway to help young tenants gain qualifications.

Project MacKenzie, which was named after a Sergeant Major from Kriss’ days in the Army, will see young Aragon tenants learning about construction while at the same time gaining valuable motivation and help to enhance their employment skills.

Kriss said: “I am delighted that we can work with Aragon on this really exciting partnership.

“One of the things I love about my work now is inspiring the younger generation in the same way I was inspired when I was younger into working hard at something which changed my life forever.”

Throughout the course, which includes training by Construction Gateway in painting and decorating, tiling, carpentry and health and safety, Aragon will be providing help and support to any participants.

On top of this Ampthill-based The Akabusi Charitable Trust, led by Kriss, will be delivering fundamental business skills as well as incorporating input from Barclays Bank, CV writing and referencing.

Sergeant Ian MacKenzie who inspired Kriss at just 16 said: “Encouragement is what young people need. In the Army they try and change everyone, because that’s what they have to do. I used to say to him, retain who you are – I used to get into trouble a bit for that.

“He has held on to what he is. He is now handing the baton over to young people. I handed it to him and he is handing it over.”
