Woolpack sports plan for Bedford.

Individuals and teams are being invited to put themselves forward for a mini sports tournament to kick-off the launch of Bedford’s newest community facility – the Woolpack Hub.

Teams of five from Bedford and the surrounding area will compete for fun in football and netball on the new all-weather pitch in the town centre.

Indoors there will be a table tennis competition to mark the centre’s launch at a street festival on May 24 which will be attended by MP Richard Fuller, Mayor Dave Hodgson and a couple of surprise guests.

There will be various matches for people from across the community. Individuals are invited to put themselves forward to be part of scratch teams if they wish to join in.

The stretch of road between the two sites will be closed off for the family event which will feature music, free activities for children, refreshments and sports.

Entertainment for the event will feature a host of different performers representing all sides of Bedford’s community playing in the main hall including an Indian dance group, an opera singer, the Salvation Army band and even a nod to the Woolpack’s past with an couple of Irish tunes.

The Salvation Army will run the new centre for all members of the community opposite its Congress Hall in Commercial Road.

Salvation Army Corps Officer Major Allchin said: “This is a facility for Bedford and we can’t think of any better way to kick it all off than by inviting members of the community to take part in this event.

“We are all looking forward to a very special day of celebration to mark this excellent new facility.”

All the matches will be refereed and organised into different age groups which will ensure fair play and fair games.

Funding for the Multi Use Games Area was provided by Waste Recycling Environment Ltd (WREN).

The Salvation Army will run the Woolpack Hub on a not-for-profit basis as a dry house with no alcohol, tobacco or gambling. Once launched members of the community will be able to make use of the facilities which will be run on a not-for-profit basis.
