Iron Age meets Roman era at RSPB
Archery, javelins and flint knapping with the RSPB
VISITORS to the RSPB reserve explored 8,000 years of human habitation on Saturday and Sunday.
Time Explorers took place at The Lodge in Sandy, complete with an iron age and early Roman re-enactment group who made a living history camp and displayed some very sharp weapons. There was also archery and javelin throwing in a fight arena.
Expert flint knapper, Will Lord, demonstrated the art of arrowhead and flint tool making.
Children and adults were invited to walk to the site's Iron Age hill fort in the company of an English Heritage expert.
RSPB publicity officer, Grahame Madge, said: "There were well in excess of 1,000 visitors over the two days. The verbal and written feedback was that it was above expectations. It was extremely popular with families.
"The Lodge has had a very interesting history. People saw the RSPB in a new light and left with a better understanding of Sandy's history."
The event was organised by the RSPB in conjunction with English Heritage.
