A BUSINESSMAN who plans to open up a lapdancing club in Ampthill says the venue will open regardless of whether or not his ‘sex’ licence is approved.

The Times & Citizen was the first to reveal John Shayler’s ambitious plans for the venue last month, when he likened himself to “Walt Disney who offers his customers a Disneyland experience”.

Mr Shayler has submitted an application for a sexual entertainment licence, but Central Beds Council has since received 67 letters of objections against the plan.

The deadline for objections is Saturday.

However the controversial businessman says he will re-open the venue in Church Street regardless of whether his application is approved.

He said: “I will be opening regardless, it doesn’t matter whether or not I get the licence, the bar is being built as we speak.

“I already have a licence that means I can run a club, and I can have my staff wearing underwear and dancing on the bar.

“Nobody has actually come up to me and asked me about the club at all. I have been to Ampthill many times and people just say ‘Hi,’ to me and that’s it. I have offered people the chance to approach me with another idea for the club, but so far nobody has.”

Mr Shayler, who also owns two other lapdancing clubs, intends to open what he describes as “coyote ugly” style bar with staff dancing on the bar.

If his application for a sexual entertainment licence is approved then the nudity in the club would be allowed and ‘private dances’ would be held downstairs in the basement.

Ampthill Town Council has also objected to the application on grounds that it would be inappropriate for the area.

A sign has since gone up on the venue asking people to apply to work in the club including gay and lesbian dancers, transvestites, transsexuals, and both straight men and women.

He added: “That’s exactly what I do with my other club and if I want to run three clubs then I need more dancers.

“It’s not just women I want it’s all different types so I can cater for all different tastes.”
