Hundreds sign up to Dunstable bypass e-petition
Fresh show of support for the road scheme
Hundreds of people have now signed an 'e-petition' on the Downing Street website, pressing for a speedy start for the A5 Dunstable northern bypass.
Now petition organisers, the Dunstable Area Focus Group, are calling for more people to add their names, in a week when a meeting could affect the timing of the bypass scheme.
Today, Friday, March 5, the East of England Regional Transport Forum will be urged to back the Dunstable bypass as a top priority for roads funding. The forum is also expected to discuss a scheme for the A11.
Central Beds councillor Nigel Young, a member of the new focus group, this week warned: "In the present economic climate, there is a real possibility that funding will be revised for major schemes, which could affect the A5-M1 link."
South West Beds MP Andrew Selous pointed out that in 2006, the Secretary of State for Transport said that the northern bypass should be considered for an earlier start than proposed at that time, if there was any 'slippage' in other schemes.
Mr Selous said it would be 'an absolute tragedy' if the bypass was delayed.
Central Beds councillor Tom Nicols will be reminding the transport forum of the desperate need for the A5 bypass.
The new 'e-petition' states: "Our town has waited patiently for over 40 years for this bypass. It must start without any further delays, before the town becomes completely gridlocked."
Focus group chairman Steve Coates says: 'Don't delay... sign today.'
