How the figures add up for your council tax bill

Final tally is set

The number-crunching is over and the overall council tax bill heading for your doormat has now been set.

Dunstable householders living in average band D properties will have to put their hands into their pockets to pay 1,711.01 in council tax for 2010/11.

In Houghton Regis, average band D households will raid the piggy bank to pay 1,700.05 in council tax for the coming year.

The council tax bill includes share-outs for various bodies.

Of those, the lion's share goes to Central Beds Council, which set its portion on Thursday.

Average band D households in the southern part of Central Beds will pay 1,344.15 for services from that new unitary authority, a rise of 2.95 per cent.

The council says that to save money, top jobs are being cut by 20 per cent, fewer temporary staff will be employed, some recruitment will be frozen and costs will be reduced for marketing, risk management, legal and member services, buildings, equipment, training and conferences.

It says it has increased council tax to protect vital services, in the face of less government support, reduced investment income and the rising demand for its services. Severe weather has also meant a big rise in the number of potholes to be repaired.

In Dunstable, households in average band D homes will pay 139.65 for Dunstable Town Council services, compared to 133.13 in 2009/10, a 4.9 per cent rise.

In Houghton Regis, average band D households will pay 128.69 for Houghton Regis Town Council services, compared to 126.26 in the current financial year, a rise of 1.92 per cent.

Bedfordshire Police Authority will receive 144.77 and Beds and Luton Combined Fire Authority will be given 82.44 from the 2010/11 council tax bill for average band D households.
