Host of events for all the family

From markets, craft fairs to river races there's something for all the family

Autumn may be upon us but that's no reason to go into early hibernation. There are still plenty of events aimed at all the family on offer, so why not get out there and sample some of the

highlights?

Bedford's general market is always a hive of activity, with bargains galore to be found. And on Saturday, in addition to the colourful general market, there will also be a 'handmade in

Bedfordshire' market, where a selection of local crafts and produce will be on sale.

Also on Saturday, an annual craft fair takes place at Great Barford Village Hall. You could take a trip on the X5 bus and take advantage of a selection of stalls, including homemade cakes, raffle and tombola. Entry costs 50p and under fives go free.

Also this weekend, the Glenn Miller Museum at Twinwood Arena hosts an end-of-season show and steam organ fair.

It will feature a collection of vintage steam and fairground organs, creating the nostalgic atmosphere of a bygone era. Food and drink will be available, and the Officers' Mess Bar will be open. There are plenty of undercover attractions too, so, whatever the weather, this promises to be a very interesting and enjoyable day out.

A day ticket for adults costs 5, children under 16 are admitted free, and tickets are available on the gate. For more information call 01923 282725 or go to the website www.twinwoodevents.com

The Bedford Autumn Fours And Small Boats Head Of The River Race takes place between 9.30am and 5pm this Sunday.

Rowing clubs, schools and colleges from across the region will be competing against the clock and each other along the 2,000-metre course. Viewing is free along the Embankment.

And next Sunday, October 19, don't miss the annual National Apple Day at Bromham Mill, which hosts a range of activities including apple bobbing, pressing and peeling, Morris dancing, art activities for children and a 'Big Food Fayre'. Admission is 5, 3 for concessions, and children under 16 go free. For more details call 01234 824330.

For over 18s only, the 31st annual Bedford Beer And Cider Festival is currently under way at the Corn Exchange in St Paul's Square.

Organised by the Campaign For Real Ale (CAMRA), the event runs from 11.30am to 11pm until Saturday, with live entertainment on the closing evening. Entry is free before 5pm, with charges applying after that.
