Horace's last wish fulfilled
Dying man weds childhood sweetheart
A Luton man was granted his dying wish at the weekend when he married his childhood sweetheart in Kettering.
Horace Prescott, 64, of Harry Scott Court in Toddington Road, finally tied the knot with Dawn Prescott, 59, of Wellingborough - more than four decades after they first met.
And the happy couple - who may have only weeks as man and wife - had a dream wedding, thanks to an appeal in our sister paper the Evening Telegraph.
Former lorry driver Horace, who has terminal cancer, said: "We're both really happy and delighted to be married."
He proposed to Dawn after being told he had only months to live. They decided to marry immediately, even though they couldn't afford all the trimmings. But after their story appeared in the local paper, generous readers rushed to assist. One offered his 1979 vintage Rolls Royce Silver Shadow as a wedding car and the Holiday Inn in Corby donated a lavish three-course meal and reception.
The new Mrs Prescott said: "The way everyone came together to help us has been amazing. People are just so warm and it has given us such a lift. There are no words to express how kind they have been. I feel wonderful and we're both very happy."
And while she was aware they'd be arriving in style for their Register Office nuptials, it came as a complete surprise to her groom. Horace said: "I couldn't believe it. I was really shocked. It was such a surprise to see the car pull up and it was a lovely way to arrive for our wedding."
Rolls Royce owner Martyn Warsop of Barton Seagrave said modestly: "I was very happy to help them out on their special day."
The couple have been together 10 years and first met as teenagers when they lived in the same block of flats in Camberwell, south London. They were reunited after divorcing their respective partners.
Horace was diagnosed with bowel and bladder cancer three years ago. It has now returned to his stomach and kidneys. He said: "We both want a piece of happiness in the short time I have left."
Dawn added: "Horace said it was his dying wish that we get married."
And even though their time together may be limited, it has had a happy ending.
